Today the site’s tagline “or so the plan says” proved apt and gave a wonderful example of the unpredictability of this trip. My sister, who is 2 years older than me, has decided that she is going to join me for the North American leg of the trip. This isn’t quite a spur of the moment decision, I’ve known it’s been in her mind for a little while, but still it’s a big change.

First and foremost, I’m glad that she’s decided to come, it’s a great chance to spend time with her having been away in Asia for the last 6 years. On top of that, it’ll make the transition from home life to world cyclist easier having somewhere with me and give me someone to break the repetitiveness of pedalling all day. Obviously it’ll also add some challenges, the most obvious one to me being that I’ve already got a tent and there’s no way we can share it comfortably so finding a place to wild camp or sleep gets a bit harder. Asking someone for permission to throw up a tent in their garden is one thing, asking for two tents? They might think we’re trying to set a community up!

Outside of that not much has happened. I’ve ordered my laptop, a Lenovo x120e, a 1TB Toshiba external hard drive and a new helmet. My Visa debit card should arrive in the next few days, now to apply for my Mastercard. I’ve been out on a few rides to test the bike out and break the saddle in. My most recent being a 50 miler yesterday which was half of the course done on a local cyclo sportive. The official event was run the day before but would have cost me £100 to enter and I didn’t know about until after the event anyway. Paying that much to get a medal and some food doesn’t sound worth it, so even if I’d known I probably wouldn’t have joined.

As far as what comes next, I still need to find insurance and cooking stuff as well as a bunch of small things. I’m going for a short practice tour this Thursday-Saturday. I’ll ride the 50 miles (80km) to my grandparents on Thursday before riding about the same again on Friday from there to my cousin’s for her 18th birthday. Then probably a 30-40 mile ride to visit a friend before getting the train home with my bike. It looks like it’s going to be wet, but that’s a good test, and it’s not like I’ll not have to ride in the rain at any time during the trip.
