We slept pretty well and tried to head off early to beat the heat. We knew there was a climb out of town and then the road would flatten out. We’d filled our bottles the night before, and so were out and going. I spotted a tamale vendor pushing his card and having 7 pesos in my pocket decided to buy one, it ended up being a great choice because we didn’t find a place to stop for a good while.
Pedro had been having problems with his left knee before we got to DF, so much so that in Mexico City he went to physio frequently and laid off cycling to let it get better. However, being back on the bike was giving him grief again and was glad to find ice where we stopped for a few tacos. He rested it against his leg while we were stopped and with an ibuprofen it helped reduce the inflammation so that it wasn’t too painful to ride.
The ride to Morelia was fairly nice, with my highlight being a really pretty lake that we rode along covered in something green, maybe watercress, who knows! Some kind of invasive plant that was taking over the lake, but looked great.
When we got to Morelia we were starting to tire a bit, and passing past the cathedral I saw a cyclist going the other way. I smiled at him and he did a u-turn to come and speak to us. His name is Felipe and we got his phone number, he is a member of Couchsurfing and told us that if we didn’t have a place we could have stayed with him. The friendliness of strangers! We arrived at our Couchsurfing place and met David, our host for a couple of nights, as well as his wife and a Finnish friend that is living in Morelia. We tried to go to a party about an hour away, but had car problems and so had to double back and just enjoyed the evening at David’s place.
On our day off in Morelia we went for a wander around down town including a visit to the cathedral which was great. There was a classical music concert and we stayed there for a couple of hours to listen. We also went to a museum, which was free because we still have student IDs, and then we met up with Felipe to meet his family and go out for dinner, a lovely rest day!
