Those of you who have been checking here for updates will have found a certain lack of them. I’ve not really got a great reason, I definitely had the time, but I guess I just didn’t really feel that motivated to write while I was home. What motivates me again? Well, I’m back on the road! Last night, I packed my bags and, if you ignore the food I’ve got in there, they’re distinctly emptier than the last time I started so I’m looking forward to working out what I’m missing.
The idea is to take this train from Crewe to Derby and then head south to Harwich. Tuesday the 14th, C’s birthday, I’ll be taking a ferry over to Holland, and then riding down to Germany. I’ve got a bit of a plan worked out, as I’ve got to make it to Koblenz for the first weekend in May. I’ll be having a brief visit home again to see C, something I barely managed to do despite being in the UK for more than 3 months with her not being in the UK.
I think the idea for the blog is to keep it briefer. I’ve had that idea before, so we’ll see how it goes as it’s easy for it to be a big time sink. I’ll probably try to get the older posts written up over time, but we’ll see how it goes. I had my camera & GPS stolen from me in Quito just before flying home, and so have few pictures from the days that I’ve not written about. Other than that, there was a week in country 27 – Ireland, with Gaz that was quite lovely. I’ll at least make a couple of picture based posts for that.
The last thing to note is that since getting home just before Christmas I’ve changed my gear a bit. That has included my GPS (thanks Grandad!), sleeping bag, tent, sleeping bag liner, jacket, tops, and the biggest change – going back to bringing some cooking gear. I’m going to be wanting to try to keep to the same budget as I was in the Americas. Spending less than $10 a day there was easy when going out for a meal was $2-3. That’s not going to be possible going around northern Europe. I can see myself going to the more traditional cyclist diet of boiling up pasta on a startlingly frequent level.
