today (sunday 3-17) we decided to hitch a ride out of the eastern part of the country, we had already ridden over 900 KM criss-crossing and doing loops in this region, and if we keep it up like this, we will never see all of Cuba. we have heard that the region we plan to ride next is beautiful for cycling, and it should only be about a week until returning to the coast near the Bay of Pigs, where the SCUBA diving is supposed to be amazing. being the low-budget adventurers that we are, we decided

the ride out of Santiago was beautiful. we were surrounded all around by green farmland and hills as we climbed steadily for the first hour or so. martin and i had left a few hours after dominic, and at about 40km we found him sleeping in the shade at a bus stop. we continued riding together until the next town, where we stopped for some food, guarapo (sugar cane juice) and ice cream (4 cents for an ice cream cone). somehow in a matter of a few minutes, we managed to lose martin while he was off

Havana -> Baracoa

With winds being from the east and only having a month in the country, I was either going to have to just tour around Havana, or take some sort of transport. I went with the easy option of taking a Viazul bus from Havana to Holguin in the east. They are buses aimed at tourists and the one to Holguin cost about 45 CUC for the 750km. I could have tried my luck hitching a lift, or bargaining, but it was much easier just going to the bus terminal, and going with the luxury option.
