Natal – João Pessoa

Natal – João Pessoa

In Natal
My host Jac and Moab, her boyfriend, were active hosts who did their best to make sure I got to see the most of Natal in the couple of days I was there. This included visiting the Fort of the Wise Men, named because it was founded on the 6th of January, a huge number of different beaches, the historical downtown area, a toy museum, a space museum and the world’s largest cashew tree. They were also certain I had to try a variety of local foods, which meant

Kourou – Cayenne

I’d originally thought that I’d have been able to get on a tour at Le Centre Spatial Guyanais easily, but when I contacted them on Monday they said the first tour with availability was on the Thursday, and in French. I don’t speak French, but the tour ended up being OK. We got shown to the 3 launch areas – Arianne, Soyuz and Vega – but couldn’t get out at Soyuz as they were preparing for a launch that will hopefully take place

Santa Elena – Boa Vista – Lethem

It was just short of 240km from Santa Elena to Boa Vista, and about the only thing between the two was the town of Cem, named because it’s 100km short of Boa Vista. Tumeremo – Rapidos de Kamoiran

I’d been thinking of leaving Tumeremo early, and having a relaxing day at Cesar’s place, but it didn’t quite turn out like that. I slept in at the hotel, leaving the room just in time for breakfast, and followed that up with more lazing around, trying in vain to use the slow internet to download some podcasts. By 11am I figured I should do something productive, and so, after getting my sandals sewed up the day before, I took my cycling legwear to get a bit of the stitching re-done

Cúcuta – Mérida

My day off was spent hanging out in the house, but in the afternoon I went to the main shopping centre – Ventura Plaza – to change the money I would need for my month or so in Venezuela. In nearly every country I’ve been to so far, I’ve not had to worry about that and just withdrawn money from the cash machines in country thanks to my N&P (now Yorkshire) debit card where they don’t charge me for international usage. That would continue in Venezuela, but for one
